9th Grade Counseling Program

Counseling

Incoming Freshmen

Students will join us on Showcase Night in January to learn more about Whitney High School, visit the campus, meet teachers, preview courses and clubs, etc.  Our counseling staff will visit Spring View and Granite Oaks Middle Schools and discuss the transition to high school, academic and behavioral expectations, and extracurricular opportunities.  Incoming Freshman students will work with their 8th grade counselors, teachers and parents to select their 9th grade courses.  All course requests are submitted through the Aeries portal.

Fall Semester

In the fall, Counselors hold a Freshmen Parent Information Night to review the transition to high school, high school graduation requirements, college and career information, Schoology and Aeries parent portals, etc. Counselors will visit with 9th grade classes for “Career Exploration” activities via Naviance. At each progress report, struggling students will be identified and when appropriate, meetings will be scheduled to develop an action plan for student academic success.

Spring Semester

Counselors will visit with 9th grade students to discuss graduation requirements, transcripts, college readiness requirements, career pathway options, support resources, GPA calculations, summer school and 10th grade course selections. Students will preview courses on “Course Preview Day” to learn more about class offerings for 10th Grade. Students will meet one-on-one with a counselor to approve their course selections submitted through the Aeries portal. In the spring, summer school information will be available for students in need of credit recovery.
