Service Learning Hours Requirement & Process
All Whitney High School students must complete 25 hours of Service Learning to meet the Rocklin Unified School District (RUSD) graduation requirement.
What is Community Service? It is unpaid volunteer work performed to benefit a local cause or group, not a private company/organization. It must directly help others, take place outside of regular class time, and cannot yield personal financial gain or be done for the benefit of family members or friends.
- Uncompensated Time: The work must be completely free of pay or financial compensation.
- Approved Organizations: Service is typically accepted when done for 501(c)(3) non-profits, public schools, hospitals, nursing homes, or environmental cleanup groups.
- Graduation & Club Requirements: Some Clubs require community service hours in order to belong.
Unless pre-approved under special circumstances, service hours must be completed outside of regular school hours.
Students who complete 150 verifiable service hours will earn the honor of wearing a distinguished tassel at graduation.
Please remember to log your hours independently, including where you served, when, what you did, and how many hours you completed.

Service Learning Opportunities
Below is a list of community service opportunities currently available to our school. These are just a starting point—Service Learning is not limited to the options listed here. You’re encouraged to volunteer with any nonprofit organization, including churches, food banks, and charities, or to simply support people in your community who could use a helping hand.
Opportunities to make a difference are everywhere. Life brings challenges, and your willingness to help can mean the world to someone. Take a look around—when you offer your time and care, you’ll discover just how much you matter and how powerful your impact can be.
Note: While Service Learning typically involves nonprofit organizations, there are exceptions. Activities like making cards, visiting patients, doing arts and crafts, or leading games with the elderly in hospitals or assisted living facilities are also acceptable. In some cases, private companies that donate time and resources for charitable events may qualify as well.
Don’t forget to check the Wildcat Weekly for the latest community service opportunities—it’s updated regularly!
