Text: The curriculum used for the course will be College Preparatory Mathematics, Algebra II. Materials: It is recommended that each student have a graphing calculator. The Whitney High Mathematics Department recommends the TI-84 (the TI-83 plus, the TI-84 plus can also be used); however, all math for this course can be completed using a scientific calculator, or by hand. It is recommended that students have a bound graph paper notebook, quad rule composition book, a ruler, highlighter, ball-point pen (preferably red), dry erase marker (of any color) and pencils. Only work done in pencil will be accepted. Assignments: There will be an assignment given each class period. Assignments must be done in pencil and must show all work. Late assignments will not receive any credit after completion of the unit. Each student will receive an assignment sheet at the beginning of each unit. Students must check the assignment sheet for any assignments missed during an excused absence. Students will be allotted one extra day for each day of the excused absence to turn in work. Graded Assignments will be assigned every unit and graded for points equivalent to the whole stamp sheet. No late Graded Assignments will be accepted! Quizzes: At the end of every unit there will be a group quiz to help prepare for each unit test. One quiz per group will be graded at random, and all students in the group will receive the same grade. Students may choose to work independently on a group quiz, but this decision must be made and reported to the teacher prior to beginning the quiz in class. Short Daily Quizzes will also be given. Tests: There will be a test given at the end of each unit. Retakes are not offered. Grading Policy: Each essential skill will be tested in the chapter it is introduced as well as on remaining tests for the rest of the semester. Students must demonstrate proficiency on each essential skill multiple times by the end of each semester to receive a grade. Students will be given opportunities at the end of each semester to clear any missing essential skills. Grades online will be reported as incomplete (INC) until proficiency is shown on each essential skill. Incomplete grades may be reflected on progress reports as a NM. • Tests—40% • Essential Skills – 30% • Other (Homework, Quizzes, Graded Assignments, Etc.) —30% Grades will be earned as follows: 100 - 90% A 89 - 80% B 79 - 70% C 69 - 0% NC Classroom Policies: Students are expected to comply fully with all school regulations in the student handbook, including hat policy, cell phone policy, iPod policy, food and drink policy and dress code. District and school policies will be strictly enforced. A student is marked late if they enter ANY time after the bell rings. All students are expected to be in class before the bell rings. Students are encouraged to seek assistance from myself or any of the other math teachers if they do not have a full understanding of the course material. Intervention Policy: Specific essential skills will be re-taught during intervention on Wednesdays and Fridays in designated classrooms. Appointments can be made with Mrs. Lovitt for additional support on Tuesdays and Thursdays during intervention. Intervention stamps will be rewarded to those students that are currently passing the class. |
