Theatre I: Whitney High School, 2013-2014
Instructor: Email: Voice Mail: 632-6500 *6610 Office hours: Materials: You will also need a theatre binder for classwork, a composition book (college ruled), and a pen and pencil. You will often be given a copy of a scene or monologue for a class assignment. It is your responsibility to bring this to every class. Failure to do so may result in decreased participation points. Course Description: This introductory course is designed to teach students the fundamentals of actor training and theatrical concepts. Students will develop the movement, voice, and performance skills necessary for successful acting. In addition, students will learn theatre terminology, etiquette, theatre history, and elements of technical theatre. Class exercises and assignments will help build student confidence, creativity, and cooperation. Grading policy: Grades are based on point value, and will result from major assignments reflecting the course objectives. A = 90 – 100% B = 80 – 89% C= 70 – 79% NC (No Credit) = Below 70% Students must have at least 70% of the overall points, and must show mastery of skills listed in the course objectives. Essential skill projects MUST be completed in order to pass the quarter. Play critiques (one per semester): 20 points each Participation: Nearly 40% of a student’s grade is attributed to participation. All students begin with 35 out of 50 participation points (average participation). It is up to them to see that their participation becomes above average. Students earn participation points by volunteering to work before the class, volunteering for improvisations, offering thoughtful criticism to others and participating in discussion, and being a helpful member of the class. Theatre II/III/IV: Materials needed: You will need a separate binder for theatre materials, and a pen and pencil. A standard college ruled composition book (this must be brought every class!) Course Description: This course is designed to reinforce in students the fundamentals of actor training and theatrical concepts. Students will develop the movement, voice, and performance skills necessary for successful acting. Furthermore, students will learn to tap into their greater artistic instincts. Class exercises and assignments will help build student confidence, creativity, cooperation, and artistry. Grading policy: Grades are based on point value, and will result from major assignments reflecting the course objectives. Essential Skill Projects (200 points): 1st Quarter: Audition Monologue (50 points); CA Standards (advanced) 1.1, 2.1, 2.3, 3.1, 5.2 and 5.4 2nd Quarter: Contemporary Project (50 points); Standards 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2.1, 2.2, 5.1, 5.2, 5.3 3rd Quarter: Directing Scene X3 (20 points); Standards 1.1, 1.3, 2.1, 2.3, 3.2, 3.3, 5.2, and 5.3 4th Quarter: Metamorphosis Scene (50 points); Standards 1.1, 2.1, 2.3, 3.1, 3.3, 5.2 and 5.4 Play Critique: Students are required to see two live play performances (one per semester) and write a critique. Advanced actors are required to see the Fall play and Spring musical. Admission for advanced actors is free. 20 points per critique. Playwright Entries: Each day of class will begin with a written playwright entry. Each entry is worth 3 points: 1 point for proper formatting and legibility 1 point for content 1 point for length Late Work Policy: Late work may be turned in for no more than 70% credit. Intervention: If students show themselves to be disrespectful to others, or to willfully interrupt classroom learning time, the following interventions will be used: 1) A warning or reminder of detrimental behavior, with an opportunity to correct that behavior, 2) A referral. How to achieve a stamp: Stamps for extended lunch will be issued at the beginning of class. Stamps will not be reissued once the day’s lesson has begun.
