Why is Community service important?

What is Community Service?

Volunteering your time and effort in the spirit of helping others benefit from it. It is a time that you are guiding yourself through new & novel situations to learn and respond appropriately.
What does it do for you?

  • It helps connect you to your community (understand your community)
  • It benefits you when it comes time for a career (Gain experience)
  • Let’s you see & explore different areas/environments before you decide
  • Gives you time and experience in an area
  • Helps when applying for jobs/college programs
  • It raises your social awareness (empathy & compassion)
  • Helps you to better understand people & their situations in your community.
  • It connects you to new people and friendships
  • Helps you meet others that may foster similar interests
  • It improves your skills: Two types of skills are needed by employers and they are soft & hard skills. Depending on what you are volunteering to do, volunteering helps develop these skills, especially soft skills (they are your interpersonal abilities & personal attributes).

  • Creativity

  • Time management
  • Willingness to learn
  • Work ethic

Community Service will help you when it comes time to create a resume, apply for a job, apply to a college as well as when applying for scholarships. It shows the prospective employer or college representative that you are more than just a student, but one that is committed to people & the community outside of your own immediate home. It indicates that you are able to function in a greater societal situation than a structured school setting and that you are willing to put yourself outside of your comfort zone to gain this experience and learn and grow from it. Those are the types of people that employers, organizations, colleges want to include and continue to develop.
